About Jalen Ngonda
Daptone's Newest Soul Voice
Jalen Ngonda sounds like a voice from 1968 that somehow arrived now, the Maryland born soul singer whose 2023 Daptone debut announced a genuine throwback talent in the lineage of the label's revivalist roster. The new album, Doctrine of Love, deepens the spell, vintage soul that never feels like costume.
Live, that voice carries the room, backed by the warm, analog feel Daptone built its name on, the songs aching and tender in equal measure.
Neighborhood Theatre hosts November 18. Classic soul this authentic in a NoDa room is the right intimacy, every falsetto landing close. A Wednesday for the romantics.
