About Tim Scott
Speak No Evil, Played Whole
Wayne Shorter recorded Speak No Evil for Blue Note in 1964 with Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter and Elvin Jones in the room, and almost nobody plays it end to end. Tim Scott is going to, on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at Middle C Jazz, as part of the club's On the Record series.
Scott is the right local pick for it. He moved to Charlotte in 2000, came up through Northwest School of the Arts, and was touring with the Grammy winning Foreign Exchange while he was still at North Carolina Central. In 2020 he co-founded Communities in Concert, which turned parking lots and public spaces into working stages when every indoor room in the city went dark. Charlotte musicians got paid that year partly because of him.
Middle C sits below street level off Brevard, and the low ceiling does something for a horn that no system replicates. Doors at 6 for a 7 o'clock downbeat, and the tables near the band go first. If you only know Shorter from a greatest hits shuffle, hearing one of his records in sequence is a different experience entirely.
