Black Tiger Sex Machine perform in glowing tiger helmets synced to the music, which would be a gimmick if the show behind them were not genuinely one of bass music's best. The Montreal trio, Marc Chagnon, Julien Maranda, and Patrick Barry, play live rather than DJ, three stations of drum machines, keys, and launchpads, driving a dark, cinematic strain of electro and dubstep.
They also run Kannibalen Records, the label that broke Apashe, Dabin, and Kai Wachi, which makes them scene architects as much as performers. The live production, lights locked to every hit, helmets included, turns club nights into something closer to theater.
Blackbox Theater hosts June 20, 18 and up, with A Hundred Drums and Zen Selekta opening. A thousand person converted cinema with no re entry and a smoking patio, built for exactly this kind of night.
