Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán was founded in 1897. Not a typo. Gaspar Vargas formed the group in Tecalitlán, Jalisco before recorded music was a business, and five generations of musicians have carried it since, defining what mariachi sounds like for the entire world along the way.
The billing El Mejor Mariachi del Mundo started as a 1950s record label slogan and simply turned out to be true, cemented by the arrangements of Rubén Fuentes that became the genre's gold standard.
The Mariachazo bill at Ovens Auditorium on August 14 pairs them with Mariachi Nuevo Tecalitlán, two powerhouse ensembles on one Friday night. Generations of families attend these shows together, which is the entire point of the music.
