Ovens Auditorium has been Charlotte's formal night out since September of 1955. Named for David Ovens, the department store executive who championed it, the hall on Independence Boulevard was built with a glass foyer, a disappearing orchestra pit, and acoustics the city bragged about from day one. Seventy years on, it is still where a certain kind of show belongs.
The room seats about 2,400 across an orchestra level and a balcony, every seat reserved, every sightline clean. That size is the sweet spot between the Uptown theaters and the arena, big enough for touring Broadway, legacy artists, and big name comedians, intimate enough that the balcony still feels in the room.
It shares a campus with Bojangles Coliseum next door, the city's classic round room, with on site parking between them. From Uptown it is a ten minute drive out Independence, an easy night, park once, walk in, and let a seventy year old hall show off its acoustics.
