Before it was a music venue, the Neighborhood Theatre was the Astor, a movie house built in 1945 for the mill workers of North Charlotte. The mills closed, the neighborhood faded and came back as NoDa, and in 1997 the old cinema came back with it as a stage. It has anchored the district's music scene ever since, and the room still wears its movie house bones proudly.
Today it holds around 950 people, general admission, with a wide floor running back from the stage. The booking is proudly independent, Americana, indie rock, jam bands, soul, songwriters, the kind of calendar where half the fun is taking a chance on a name you barely know.
It sits right on North Davidson in the heart of NoDa, which makes it the easiest full evening in Charlotte music. Tacos or a brewery stop on the strip, the show, then a patio after. The Evening Muse is a block away if you want a nightcap of songwriters, and the Blue Line drops you at 36th Street so you can skip driving entirely.
