About Mohanad Elshieky
From Benghazi To Punchlines
Mohanad Elshieky's origin story makes every other comic's open mic grind look gentle. He started with a comedic call in radio show in Benghazi, Libya, until the station was burned down over the jokes, was targeted by militias, came to Portland on an exchange program in 2014, and won asylum in 2018 while building an American standup career from scratch.
The comedy that came out of all that is dry, precise, and disarmingly funny about immigration bureaucracy, identity, and American absurdities seen through fresh eyes. The resume caught up fast, sets on Conan and Colbert, producing for Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, and a writing gig on NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me.
He plays The Comedy Club at Duckworth's on June 14, 18 and up, a hundred seats above the taphouse at Tryon and 7th. Smart, story driven standup in a room built for exactly that.
