PawPaw Rod sounds like a record collection having a good day. Born in Hawaii and raised in Oklahoma, he glides a mellow baritone between rap and melody over sixties soul, funk basslines, and handclap grooves, a combination that broke out with Hit Em Where It Hurts in 2020 and has since stacked up 200 million streams and fans at Complex, FADER, and Rolling Stone.
Four EPs in, the songs stay breezy on the surface and sneaky underneath, hooks that loiter in your head for days, grooves that pull a room into motion without ever seeming to try. It is feel good music made by someone with genuine taste.
The Picture Day Tour lands at the Neighborhood Theatre in NoDa on June 13 with Toronto soul rapper TOBi opening, a strong double bill for a Saturday in the arts district. Tacos on North Davidson first, grooves after.
