Fifty Years, Two Hundred Seats
Spyro Gyra has been on the road since 1974, and the numbers are absurd, more than ten thousand shows, 35 albums, platinum records, and two crossover hits, Morning Dance and Shaker Song, that put jazz fusion on pop radio when that was still possible. Fifty years on, the band still plays like it has something to prove.
What makes the June 11 stop special is the room. Middle C Jazz holds about 200 people at tables, which means a band that has headlined festivals for half a century will be close enough to watch the saxophone keys move. Their brand of fusion, melodic, Caribbean tinged, virtuosic without showing off, was built for exactly this kind of listening room.
It is an early show in Uptown, dinner and drinks served at your seat, and the math is simple, fifty years of catalog divided among two hundred chairs. Tickets will not wait, and the front tables go first.
