The Beths write the kind of guitar pop that sounds effortless and absolutely is not, four Auckland jazz school graduates turning anxiety into harmony stacked hooks. Their 2025 album Straight Line Was A Lie, written in Los Angeles and self recorded back home, debuted at number one in New Zealand and extended one of indie rock's most reliable streaks, no bad albums, no filler.
Elizabeth Stokes sings like she is apologizing for how catchy the chorus is about to be, and the band behind her plays with a precision that makes the joy hit harder. Expert In A Dying Field made them festival regulars, and the live shows are warm, funny, and tight as a drum.
They play The Underground on June 16 with Squirrel Flower opening, 750 capacity for a band co headlining with Spoon elsewhere this summer. That is the good kind of booking mistake, take advantage of it.
