Three Bands, One Bassist
Les Claypool decided one band per night was for other people. The Claypool Gold tour puts three of his outfits on a single bill, Primus, the funk metal institution he has led since the late eighties, Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, and The Claypool Lennon Delirium, his psych rock partnership with Sean Ono Lennon, all sharing the stage across one long, fluid evening with setlists that change nightly.
It is a format only Claypool could sell, because the through line is him, the most recognizable bass player of his generation, equal parts virtuoso and carnival barker. Expect Primus staples, Pink Floyd covers from the Brigade songbook, Delirium psychedelia, and combinations nobody planned.
The June 16 stop lands at TD Amp Ballantyne, a 5,000 person lawn in south Charlotte, an early start for a long night. Weirdness this committed rarely comes this comfortable.
