Upcoming At Bojangles Coliseum

When the Charlotte Coliseum opened on Independence Boulevard in September of 1955, its dome was the largest free span in the world, 332 feet across with no columns holding it up, and 13,000 people showed up just for the dedication. Seventy years and three renames later, Charlotte Coliseum, then Independence Arena, then Cricket Arena, the building everyone now calls Bojangles Coliseum is still doing the same job under the same tin dome.

The round room holds roughly 9,000 depending on the setup, with the stage at one end and the bowl curving around it. These days it splits time between Checkers hockey and a steady run of concerts, gospel shows, and the touring productions that fit between a theater and the big Uptown arena. The curve of the dome gives the room its character, you feel the crowd wrap around the stage.

It shares a campus and a parking lot with Ovens Auditorium next door, so the night out logistics are the easiest of any Charlotte venue this size, drive out Independence, park once in the middle, and walk into whichever building your ticket says. Just double check that ticket, two venues share the address.

Good To Know Before You Go

What is the Bojangles Coliseum seating chart like?
A round arena bowl under the dome, with the stage usually set at one end and the seating curving around the floor. The chart on this page shows the typical concert layout. Floor seats sit closest, and the bowl's curve means even side sections face the stage naturally.
How big is Bojangles Coliseum?
Roughly 9,000 at capacity depending on the event setup, between the theaters and the Uptown arena in size. When it opened in 1955 it was the largest free span dome in the world, 332 feet across with no interior columns.
Is Bojangles Coliseum the same as the old Charlotte Coliseum?
It is the original one. The building opened as the Charlotte Coliseum in 1955, became Independence Arena in 1988, Cricket Arena in 2001, and Bojangles Coliseum in 2008. A second, larger Charlotte Coliseum existed on Tyvola Road from 1988 to 2007, which causes the confusion.
Where do you park at Bojangles Coliseum?
On site lots shared with Ovens Auditorium next door on the Independence Boulevard campus. Parking is simple by Charlotte standards, just allow a few extra minutes when both buildings have events.
Is Bojangles Coliseum the same building as Ovens Auditorium?
No, they are neighbors on the same campus. The coliseum is the round dome arena, Ovens is the seated theater next door. Check your ticket so you walk into the right one.
Who plays Bojangles Coliseum?
Touring concerts, gospel and holiday shows, family productions, and Charlotte Checkers hockey. It is the room for shows too big for the theaters but not arena scale.
How old is Bojangles Coliseum?
It opened September 11, 1955, the same day as Ovens Auditorium next door, and it has been hosting Charlotte's shows for seventy years.
