Upcoming At The Evening Muse

The Evening Muse turned 25 in April of 2026, and the man who opened it is still behind the sound board. Joe Kuhlmann converted a NoDa coffeehouse into a listening room in the spring of 2001, back when the neighborhood was still a gamble, and a quarter century of songwriters later, the room at 36th and North Davidson has outlasted every trend that was supposed to kill it.

It is genuinely small, about 80 seats when the chairs are down, 120 standing, and the setup changes show to show because the artist gets to choose. What never changes is the house ethos, respect the music. Crowds here actually hush. That reputation is why the bookings punch so far above the room's size, the Avett Brothers played it on their way up, and acts like Lake Street Dive and Shovels and Rope came through before the bigger rooms called.

Monday nights belong to the open mic, the Find Your Muse night that has been the front door into Charlotte's songwriter scene for years. And the location could not be easier, the Blue Line's 36th Street station is less than a block away, with all of NoDa's food and breweries between you and the door. No kitchen inside, so eat on the strip first, then go be quiet in the best way.
